Were all hydrodynes of this vintage hand-laid fiberglass and wood stringers?

Would this boat have had a 200? Does anyone know how large of a motor the 20' was rated for?

    Thanks

20 foot outboards are not required to have a coastguard hp rating. Hydrodyne may have had a factory recommended rating. I do not recall if that is true. It would probably have been the largest outboard available that year

20's will handle big power and have been used with 3 300's for 900 hp in shows.

For family use a 200 will work. I would choose a 225 or larger for that boat. The 20 is probably the best choice for slalom. It will get pulled around the least. And if you like to experiment, you could add extra fins for better tracking. That has been done with success to an 18.

It is a very rugged boat. Ir is worth a look. Check the transom for water intrusion.

The boat is hand laid with wood stringers, plywood floor and transom and an end grain balsa core.

    Thanks Jim,

That is very helpful. I will have to see what a 225 would cost.

Did the boat sell? The seller was moving and needed to liquidate the small fleet they had assembled.

Nope, they think the boat is worth more then market.

The last reply I got from them said they are firm on price and will wrap it and store it until spring when they can get more money.

They have a lot of boats that have been for sale a long time, I didn't realize it was them until I looked at the boat. They are very proud of what they have.

There's a $1250 reserve/minimum bid on the eBay auction. I am unable to determine if this is what they feel the hull/trailer combo is worth. Had a bid been placed at five dollars above minimum, it would have sold at that price. Per the pictures it seems to be in better than average condition. There's no water puddles or drips to indicate that the gel coat has been baked to a crisp in the sun. Washing the hull not only cleans the finish, it helps greatly in pictures to show that the finish is in beautiful condition. The open admission regarding the trailer's condition and not being the original leads me to think that perhaps the owners do know the hull's relative worth. Key points are that it has a windshield and rear seat. From the information that I have garnered, some Dyners prefer the absence of these two items. More go than show. Simultaneously, the teak wood accents are a plus. When I launch my 18 into Lake Michigan, there are days where a windshield would be a big help.

The auction ended a few days back.

They think it is worth more then the starting bid. They are hard up for cash and are very proud of every boat they have for sale. Around 6 at the moment.

They only added the information about the trailer after I looked at it and told them it does not fit. The fin is hitting the trailer as it sits. When I was trying to make a deal Jim gave me some ideas how to fix this fairly easy. I can not tell how hard it is resting on the fin so no idea if damage has been done.

All 4 tires would have to be replaced to move it from its current position. Wiring does not work and the trailer was cut smaller at some point and the welding was never finished. The trailer is as much of a project as the boat, maybe more.

As far as I know all of this model boat came with windshields.

The interior has a set of miss-matched front seats and sun weathered everything else. Not to say it can't be fixed.

The hull is in good shape but does have some pretty deep scratches. Because of the large graphics (pretty sure it is painted, they are not decals from what I could tell) I think it would needs some work to look nice again.

I really wanted to make the boat work but when I started adding up how much I would be into vs buying something complete, I decided to buy something complete. I ended up buying a barefoot Sanger, not a Hydrodyne but will get me on the water.

I hope it goes to a good home, it is a boat that deserves to be on the water again.

    OK.
Not a Hydrodyne. A Sanger. You did a great thing. Sanger. Family owned. Hand built. An excellent craft. Outboard or inboard? How old? It was a good choice. On the water or in the garage working. Now you should be skiing. The powerball is at 90 mil. If you won it you could have Tom Miller restore the dyne and get one of his new eighteens. Then build your own private ski estate with all of the goodies.
Bumper sticker logic; life is short...ski hard. Enough said.
    Kudos to you!
