My newly acquired 18' I/O skier had a custom ski post mounted to the floor and the front of the exhaust manifolds. I removed it and reinstalled the original reinforced aluminum post; to the floor and the 'bulkheads' on each side. This post is about 1"-2" above the motor hood top. On my 20' I/O skier it is at least 8" higher. Was the post height established on the basis that assumed it needed to clear outboard drives? Any experience with a low post out there?
Low post is better, less pitch up. It just has to clear the motor hood. I drove my I/O like that for years, then converted to outboard, same post.
Thanks Jim, that is what I thought. I may lower the post on my '71 as it is about 10" above the hood. Just out of curiosity has the idea of mounting the two upper supports to the motor been discussed on the site? That is the way my '78 was being run for some time; with a bar built to do that. I have converted back to the normal mounting system with the original post.
Pylon height for the Inline-6 and the V-8's were not always the same in my experience. If you have a V-8, short pylon is the way to go but with a I-6, the pylon was ~4 inches longer for more leverage on the pullouts. This conclusion is based on owing both a 1975 V-8 and a 1973 I-6.
