The lateral play would be between the drive (which bolts to the back of the bellhousing) and the lower wear surfaces on the gimbal ring. It is an aluminum on aluminum situation and it galls and wears on the older drives producing lateral play which alloys the drive to shift to one side enough to increase torque steer.

The lower leg of my Volvo outdrive is totaly removable. It pivots on two large stainless dowels that are inserted thru the transom plate and secured by allen head bolts. Were they go into the lower leg there are nylon bushings, that are wear points and are new on mine. The u-joint just basically slips into the drive assembly like a drivshaft on a car slips into a tranny and is sealed from water by a rubber belows. The drive assembly has a collar on it that takes a thick rubber gasket on the inside of the boat. This rubber gasket in conjunction with another thick gasket, tapered ring and 6 long 3/8" bolts, sandwich the transom plate together with the drive assembly creating a water tight seal with only the end of the drive assembly protruding to slide the u-joint yoke into. As far as any wear pionts, I don't really see any. The picture you had was of a Mercruiser outdrive, maybe they're constructed with a totaly different design. Everything on the drive has been gone through and what ever needed to be replaced was. I've gone this far with the boat I might as well check everything.

    Thanks guys!!
It's been a long and hard job, but I should get many years out of it.
When I first started in to it, I thought it would never end, I've done many car restorations and I sware I could have done 3 cars in the time I spent on this boat!! More parts than you think!!
But it's deffinatly an interesting boat and I know everyone who sees it will wonder what the heck it is.
Anyway Here's a couple more pictures as I progress.

What kind of paint and process did you use ? Did you flip the boat to do the bottom, or hang it and paint from below ??? Looks like you got quite a gloss out of it.
