Hi guys. its been a while since ive posted. but ive monitored all the new Dynes around. love em all. ive noticed a few more i/o s getting out here. thats great. just wondering if anyone found a way to get power steering on an i/o? its so tight any mercruiser ram doesnt fit. i changed out the stock 305 last year and built a 350 for it. just a bit of power to try and control with standard controls. im hoping to pull the motor this winter and get it on a dyno? should be close to 400hp? i hope..... Thanks for any help you can suggest. Heres a pic of the motor
Nice engine compartment. I have not converted from the the original steering that came with my boat but would be interested to see if you are sucessful. My engine takes up a lot of space as well (351 Winsor mercruiser, attached pic) and wondered how the hyrdaulic conversion would work. Kevin-
thanks guys. jim, i did look at those setups and they are a bit expensive. i tried a mercruiser ram but its about 2 inches too long. it hits the side. im wondering if anyone else makes a shorter version??? i have a feeling some machining and cypherings gonna be necessary? kevin looks like your in the same boat. HAHA.
I reread your question and I see that I did not address it. I do not know of a shorter ram. edit: Teleflex/Seastar does make various systems that might be adapted to you application. If you go with an internal system, I would check and see if your tiller is up to it. If your tiller is the same as the modern power steering alpha systems, it will probably be ok. A lot of the big outboards have gone to the external systems because of failures of the tiller to cable fitting bolt. jim
Thanks for the tips jim. ive seen the cpperformance already, and yes just a bit more than i wanted to spend. i have to look at bobs site. i actually just got a new alpha gimbal ring and tiller arm because i heard stories about the weaker pre alpha i had. i talked to a guy that said something about a "remote" hydraulic ram or something that was used on some boats? he said that he may be able to machine something that could work? it would make driving so much easier. i got the DEATH GRIP on the wheel at 60+ mph.
