Hello all I'm new to this thread and was looking into biting a 19ft 69 hydrodyne ski and pleasure cruiser for 2,300, had Bimini top, 125 merc, no scratches or dings on outside at all, and inside is very clean, question being with this being my first boat and all are these boards considered good reliable boats, and do they make speaker/wakeboard-towers for these years? Thanks in advance for any information

Welcome to the forum. If this is your 1st boat I would say no. If you really want it you should get a friend that has had several boats to look at it. Buying a 45+ year old boat is a very poor idea if you know little about boats. My 1972 is undergoing a total restoration because the wood they put in the boats back than was totally rotted. If it was stored indoors for it's life you would be ok - but I suspect this is not the case. The core and transom are key areas you need to look at.

On to the motor. I am assuming the Merc is close to the age of the boat. The HP matches what Merc offered then. A motor that old will be nothing but trouble for a 1st time boat owner. Don't get me wrong - I am a Merc guy - but you need to know more than you do to run one of these old towers of power.

Let me continue. A 1st time boat buyer IMO should buy a 4 to 5 year old boat because the major depreciation has occurred and boats tend to hold for awhile after that. Old Hydrodynes were never designed for a wake tower and do not have the necessary deck re-inforcement to support that. It could be done - but not by a 1st time owner. Just telling it like it is. I know this is not what you want to hear but when other members of this forum chirp in and agree with me this forum will save you a boatload of frustration and money.

I agree with tj309. If memory serves me correctly that motor was only built for 1 or 2 years. Parts could be a problem. The boat might be great, but it could also be a nightmare. It is too risky, specially at that price.

By the way, that is an 18.

I think the Merc 125, 135, 140, 115 etc. share all parts. The 6 cylinders tower of power were famous motors that actually put out more power than advertised. Merc tweaked the heads to milk more power during those years. However back to the thread....

    Do Not Buy That Boat!!!!

Spend more money now for a turn-key rig and be happy.

Dry storage ='s good bones on an old boat. that being said, 69's had the seats mounted directly into the core ( no false or raised floor) so a lot of them have ended up with potting soil or worm-dirt for cores (rotted out beneath the glass). As others have expressed, I would be very careful about buying a 69 or earlier. I have owned three post-1970 Hydrodynes with good cores.

    Good luck with your decision!
