I have a 1983 20' OB sitting on what I believe is the original trailer. The character I bought the rig from gave me a song and dance about trailers not having to be titled in his state, but I need one for a title/registration my state. My bad. The trailer has been painted a couple of times and I don't know where to look for the VIN number which I need for a title. Does anyone here know where to look? Thanks, Scott
It is possible that a 30 year old trailer never had a VIN number. If there is one, I would guess somewhere near the hitch coupler. I'm not sure what your laws are, but MN allows you to register a home built trailer with no VIN. From what I hear, this is used as a loophole in some cases when no original information can be found.
Illinois also used to let you title something like this as "homemade" but have really tightened up lately. A guy recently applied for homemade title and they refused it stating they wanted to see all the reciepts for the parts he used. Having some bills for lights, new jack leg, whl. brngs. etc. he submitted it and was again refused because they said that wasn't enough parts to construct a trailer. Bob
Florida does not title trailers, they do register them for tags. The last time I checked (years ago) WI did not title or register them. jim
