What is Googlebot, MSNBot etc...

I was emailed about the user name Googlebot asking what it was.

We currently have 5 bots running through the system documenting all the information on the site for use in the respective search engines. GoogleBot happens to be here the most but we also have, MSNBot, Yahoo!SlupBot, Alexabot, AskBot. They come through on a daily basis. So that is why you see them pop up. It is wierd because when I look to see what people are looking at it will say "GoogleBot reading topics in Hydrodyne Boats"
