I just purchased a 1962 1600, I believe... it is missing the windshield and all cushions, it has a 28hp johnson on it. I really am looking for a place for an original parts list any info I can, the previous owner really new nothing of these boats... neither do I... Why are some of them port side drive and others are starboard? What is the horsepower rating? How do they handle with that hp motor? I am sure I will have more ??? as I get into playing with this boat... Thank you for your time in helping an ignorant fool like myself...
Welcome to the forum. I will try to take your questions in order. I have never seen an original parts list and the only parts available are used and those that are sort of standard like rub rails etc. Many of the parts were off the shelf items and used on other boats as well. The boats were never what you could call production line boats. If you look at it that way and not try to establish some standard configuration it helps. I have no idea why the helm position varies except that the first owner may have installed it to his satisfaction. A lot of west coast built boats have the helm on the left, maybe because they live on the "left" coast. Many Dynes came with no placard stating the HP rating. A 16 foot boat will easily handle a 28 hp motor. I had a 16 foot MFG from that era with a 70 on it and I did not consider it to be overpowered. I think it was rated for 70. The handling takes a little getting used to. It will bank into the turns especially at low speed. Many of the boats of that era did because of the round (soft) chines. The boats are very rugged and cool. I am sure you will enjoy it. jim
Thanks Jim, We bought the boat mainly for river cruising and maybe toting a tube once in a while, we live in southern Mississippi along the coast and have multiple rivers and bays to cruise around in, the boat as no badging on it so I had no idea what I was getting other than it looked cool and very nostalgic, figured it was a unique head turner... will be nice for ullin into the dockside eateries around here and grabbin a drink.. It looks better without the windshield in my opinion. somewhere in the pictures section of this site, there was a brochure posted and although it is fuzzy I think it said it was rated at 100hp! I am shocked for such a little boat... do you think the 28 is under powered? There are a couple pieces of the 'aluminum' rub rail missing but other than that in very good shape. I guess we were typing at the same time. I would not say that it is underpowered. That is for you to decide. I think it will handle more. I doubt that it was rated for 100hp although it would probably handle if the bottom and transom are sound and the driver was VERY experienced. jim

at this point there is no plan to upgrade motor, it is just a curiosity thing. Are these boats noted for handling or speed or quality? It seems to be built very well.
The boats are know for their durability and ruggedness. They are not particularly fast because of the bottom design. The handling is as I described above. We were typing at the same time again. Please see my post above, the boat is rated for 90hp. jim
I have a 1960s 1600 also and it has a 40HP Johnson with a 15 inch transom and it is a little bit rough in small chop at high speeds. It also is a little scary in a high speed turn. Most of all your boat is very cool looking and respected. It will take a bigger motor, Just be wise.
i have a 1966 16ft it has a volvo motor with two carbs, it is running but i cant decide if i want to update the entire drive or not
