I was just wondering if anyone has ever mounted the counter rotator on the drivers side? Does the boat perform or handle differently?

They always say the props should be spinning outward for best power, inward for best speed in counter setups. Just a rule of thumb I was told by the Yamaha guys when we were setting up our triple originally before we switched to Evinrude.

And now that at least evinrude (maybe others too?) are selling motors with either left or right hand rotation from the factory, you don't necessarilly have to live with a twin with both rotating the same way (without forking over another $1500 or so for a counter rotating lower unit)!

I tell you what, I wish they made a counter rotating lower unit for the old inlines. I keep one motor slightly trimmed up so that the boat stays level. Torque is not much of an issue any more since I put the Hydraulic steering in.

    Daniel,

I think a V-6 lower unit can be modified to fit. I will check if you like. It's only $$$

I would just ahve to buy two unless they match the older lower units in appearence. That would be the only down side. But please, if you could find out that would be great.

OK, I just called my GURU. He has done that both ways. You either leave out the front stud or weld the hole closed and drill one in the location for the V-6 gear case. This should be no problem in CA with all the technology available out there. The shift shaft needs to be bent a little since there is a 1/4 inch misalignment.

The V-6 gear boxes are much stronger and they can be had with the same 2 to 1 ratio or 1.87 to 1. Both ratios come in counter rotating. I would suggest the 2 to 1 for better torque. The 2 to 1 was used on the 150 hp and 135 V-6's. Check with your mechanic and see if he is willing to do the mods.

The next issue is to find the gear cases. Be very careful when buying used gear cases.

I have been looking for gear cases, not an easy endeavor. I will keep looking and see what it will eventually cost. For me not having counter rotating is not that big of a deal it would just be nice. But of coarse it might increase the turbulence in the wash since it would be turning the same direction.

PS Thanks for the help Jim

The lefty is the hard one. I would either buy a matched pair or the lefty first. I think it will cost more than it is worth unless you get lucky.
