Hey Dyners, New guy here. My father bought our dyne new in 1967 (I think). So many of the memories that I associate with childhood include that boat. We skied competitively and performed ski shows behind the dyne throughout the 60's, 70's and 80,s. I learned to ski behind her as a child and now my wife and children have done the same. Unfortunately, my father passed away a few years ago and I gave into the inboard craze. The dyne has been under water several times and has been sitting outside in the elements for several seasons now but for some reason I just couldn't talk myself into letting her go despite pressure from my mother and the rest of the family. Then, I discovered Hydrodiners.Com and must say what a refreshing and unselfish bunch you are. I've been reading many of your posts and have been inspired to do a full restoration on my Hydrodine. Being your typical type-A personality, it will take a while. Mark
Hi Mark, and welcome to the forum. I encourage you to restore the family boat. While you are doing that, are you aware that new 18 foot Dyne ski boats are available? They are built by the same guys, but under a new name since the right to use the Hydrodyne name was sold years ago. jim
Thanks guys. Jim.... You know that a new boat just wouldn't be the same. I have to question why I took a project on at least 50 times to truly appreciate it. I'm in Tampa by the way and would like to come by some weekend and see your set-up (dyne). I've got a call in back home for some pics but it may take a few days. Mark
I am here most of the time. Maybe after April 15 you could PM me. Exactly what boat do you have? The boats that were called the 17.6 were built in the 80's. There are pictures of all the models in the pictures of your glass section. Which one is yours? jim
I hadn't realized that there were several models until reading some of the posts on here. I believe that ours is a 66' or 67'. I can remember my father talking about the trip to get the boat and meeting Abe. It's about an 18 footer and we origonally had a Merc 1135 (I think) on it. Many years later we upgraded to a 175 Merc. I've been very busy with the military and haven't had it running in a few years. I'm currently in Tampa and can't get home to get the hull number to be sure of the model. I'm off most weekends and sure would like to talk boats and skiing with someone close by. Keep me posted on your schedule and I'll make a Saturday or Sunday available to drive over. I'm bugging the wife to dig through the pics and send me a few. I know that we have some typical Dyne pics that all will get a kick out of. Yes, the clown act, the boat "O" act, the saucer step ladder act, etc. etc. Maybe even a pic or two of the boat sitting on the bottom of the lake. I wish that I had her down here so I could get started with the restoration in my free time. Mark
Mark, If your boat looks sort of like this picture, you have an 18 ski boat. Since it is from the 60's, it is what I call a generation one 18. It has a double layer balsa core bottom without the raised floor. I sent you a PM. jim
That's it, but what is that thing on the back of it? They spelled Mercury wrong...... I'll give you a call this weekend.
Well, I have owned both. That is a lighter and quieter motor than a Merc although if I was younger and more active, I think I would build up a custom Merc for the boat. jim
