I thought a new thread was in order. I drove 600 miles round trip to bring home a $175 used abused ratty ugly empty hulk of a 18 'Dyne I/O today. The floor was already out, transom can be moved by hand, the stringers are just fiberglass shells with worm food inside. So needing to know if Jim was correct about the core being intact and with great trepidation because I am an eternal pessimist, just as darkness descended I drilled a 1/2" test hole in the core in the rear of the boat. I could smell fresh wood before the sawdust came out, light tan and dry as a bone. My wife thinks I am nuts because I ran over and put a piece of it in her hand to show her.

I filled it immediately with epoxy filler.

If I live long enough, this boat will be back in the water. I am a happy man.

Thanks Jim, you were right on the money!

I am glad it worked out. If the transom is bad check the interface between transom and core.

I will. If it is rotted a foot or two forward I can deal with removing and replacing that much, just didn't relish grinding the whole inside of the bottom of the hull.

    She will get better.

I think I still have a set of those grilles if you need them, they are yours.

Thanks, I'd love to have them. The cowl had a bad day years ago when it was blown off on the hiway... they look worse in person...

Thanks, I'll pm you my address and if you have a paypal acct I can send you some postage.

There is no hurry though, I have a lot of bigger fish to fry 1st!

    Thanks, Bernie

I am beginning to believe this boat was built as a factory pleasure boat, not a comp skier. First of all, the gel is a metalflake blue, deck and hull. Second, there was a big Airguide competition speedo installed with mis-matched screws over a 2" hole in the dash. Then there was the white padding that I found under the Ride Guide steering helm and the remains of screws across the top of the dash and an outline of some molding that had been installed there to finish the top edge of the padding.

Then the fact that the factory ski pylon is missing, and several sets of screw holes in the wood where the center pole would have bolted to the floor, and the fact that the guy who had it before me said that the guy who had it before HIM had an aftermarket generic pylon that he kept for another boat.

Besides, who would have a pro sign painter paint "Afternoon Delight' on the stern of a comp boat?

There was a model of the 18 that had upholstery on the dash and down the sides. I can't remember the name, but there is a discussion of it on here somewhere with pictures.

Your grilles are all boxed up and ready to mail.

Jim, Thanks. I think I am going to separate the hull and deck. The 'glass tab that holds them together only extends half way under the front deck, the 1st 4-5 feet are not glassed together. Also the wood strip that the rub rail screws in to is almost completely rotted away, so it will be easy to remove. I would like to get that tank out of there and have a good look inside and also have a good look at the block that the bow eye attaches to since it is pulled out about 2 inches.
