After reading the Transomes thread that Jim posted I am concerned that I do not have enough glass on the inside. The stringers and motorwell sides are glassed to the transom and floor with 17oz 45-45 biax. I used three layers - each one larger than the last on the transom to stringers. The transom to hull sides got the same treatment. The stringers got tabbed to the floor and one layer of 17oz biax treatment. When I install the deck I planned on using alot of glass in the motorwell to further tie in the transom to the deck structure and via the front of the splashwell to the sides of the rear deck. The transom at this point is 1 and 1/2" thick Coosa Bluewater 26 plus the original glass on the outside of the transom plus the layers of glass I lay in the motorwell and rear deck sides. How much more should I do?
I'm not sure that I have good understanding of it, but it looks like you could add thickness above the transom knees if you wish. That would form a beam to resist bowing which is the common failure mode, after they get wet which yours cannot do. Plus you have extra load paths. Jim
Hi tj309: In looking at the lay-up of your transom area. Just curious how the drain plug will drain the floor area versus the sub floor. The i/o's that i have owned have had a well which stepped down the floor to the top of the core in the rear. Do you not plan on installing a drain plug? KTB
Its hard to see in the pic but the floor does not extend all the way back to the transom. There will be a drain plug in the usual spot. The intent is to have the floor drain to the core in the stern.
Don't know if I would go with that motor set up with only 1.5" thick transom. Curious why you opted not to go with a 2" or 3" transom? Greg
The coosa core in the transom is 1.5" thick but there is/will be glass on both sides to bring the total thickness to 2".
The boat project has been slow this summer. I and everybody else went up to the cabin over the 4th of July holiday and stayed for a week and a half. We had 16 people up with one bathroom and 2 bedrooms so my wife took over the shop and put air mattresses in and I lost my shop for the duration. (maybe installing HVAC in the shop was not such a good idea). Then in August my 40th High School reunion took place in Rhinelander, WI in early August. Then my son-in-law (my primary helper) fell off the dock and broke his ankle which will require surgery to fix so I dont see any more work for at least a month. Sometimes life sucks. The transom thickness is a serious concern. I can either lay up glass one ply at a time to thicken it or contact my local boat builder to see what he can do with vacuum bagging if he can do that at one fell swoupe. As always your comments/advice is appreciated.
We had a cabin near Watersmeet, MI for years. That is just north of Eagle River. I commuted from Chicago for 15 years in the summer. I flew into Rhinelander. jim
