Kevin you got any more pictures you can show us of the restoration. I wish we could find out how many of the 20' I/O's were built. Is there a chance of a 4th one being found. Mine is holding up great especially considering how much skiing we do. The hour meter went out at 440 hours in the late 80's. Probably has about 3000 hours which I guess is not that much. Probably 80% of those hours are pulling a skier. Wish we could get together a Hydrodyne meet next summer.

    Hey Van:

Good to hear from you. I kind of go "off the grid" from mid December through February with my alpine ski coaching commitments (high school and club racing) but will see if I can spend some time going through the pictures I have taken to bring the 1985 20 i/o back to what you see in the last picture.

I sent a lot of time on it the past year and a half working on it but the crappy summer up here, it was almost a disentive to get it on the water, plus I had the 1975 18 i/o as a back up plan. The 75 went out to Avon, Colorado in mid to late- October (sold on boattrader.com) so the backup plan is toast for next summer (....as in the 85 20 i/o has to launch).

I will see what I can do to get things organized and posted in picasas web, or google. I started out in Photobucket with my 68 Firebird 400 Survivor car but they switched to a beta format that was awful so went to picasa web, which is know highjacked by google and screwed up, I'll have to figure out what is most stable.

Haven't heard a pep about anymore (as in Mike Mor) HD 20 i/o's out there but if Ashley's is #07, then there must be at least 3 to 4 more that are unaccounted for.

    Take care and Happy Holidays,

    Kevin-

Kevin, Enjoyed reading this thread about your rare bird. I suppose letting go of the '75 is somewhat of an incentive but I bet you will miss it no matter how much you enjoy the 20. Anyway, keep posting pics of progress...helps keep away the cabin fever.

    Hi Bernie:

I didn't mean to misslead with the 68 Firebird reference (rare bird comment, I'm confussed) but its a lot of fun too when the weather cooperates.

    active link is here:

The 75 i/o was a true pleasure to own and maintain. It was one of those hydrodyne examples that if kept up and not changed, will be in a museum at some point by its unique provinance and history. It was a great and very reliable platform which never let me down for 15 years of ownership. The gentleman that I sold it to (in or around Avon,CO) was provided a link to this web site and I'd imagine that he will show up here in the spring (or summer in Colorado I'd guess, once he has taken it out).

I liked the handling of the 18's soft chines and shorter hull length but will see how the 20 matches up. Didn't have power steering in the 18 and there was a bit of torque steer but the 20 i/o has power steering which should be nice for all who drive it.

The 20 is in hibernation but will attempt to get some restro pics up this winter, current final pics when it comes out in the spring.

Kevin - do you have hydraulic steering in the 18?

    Hi Bernie:

No hydraulic steering for the 18. The risers on the 351 V8 (probably all the ford marine V8's for that matter) didn't allow for the clearance on the inside of the transom (see attached). The right prop pitch will cure the majority of the tourque steer but I didn't experiment too much. I used a regular 3 blade SST 21P and tried a 17P high five which worked pretty well but gave up about 5 mph some top end; toped out at 48 mph with a 21P.

    Hey guys,

I'm new on the forum and just bought my first hydrodyne! I bought it from a coworker and am still waiting on the title. I'm pretty sure it is around a 1985 20' i/o, it looks something like a lot of the pics I've seen on this forum so I was wondering if anybody could tell me what the model of it is, can't find many pictures on the internet or anything. She's a good looking boat just needs some lovin to make her shine.

    Hi Isaac:

In review of the pictures provided, I think you may have a Hydrodyne 18 i/o that has similar lines to the HD 20. There was an 18 i/o that had similar features to your boat earlier in this post (see attached pics). It also has a walk-through windshield, but the gauges were in pods mounted to the dash rather than having the dash cluster "bump" molded in the Fglass top deck, it had an engine compartment that lifted to the side, and the bench seat was not a large Fglass structure which takes up a lot of real estate in the HD 20. Also, the 20 HD top deck is recessed for the cleats which isn't the case with yours or the one in the attached pics. Take a look at the attached photos of a 1978 proto type for the HD 20. If you have an 18 trying to be a 20, you may have a rare boat.

A Tape measure would tell you what you have. Also, my 73, 75, and now my 20 have a hull ID in the gelcoat on the starboard transom. If you post the hull ID, the build date can be determined.

This is an interesting and probably very rare and unique boat if an 18, or 20. Is there that much snow in Indiana?

    Thanks Kevin

Yes there is that much snow here in Indiana. It has been like this for the past couple months and will hopefully be over soon and get above 30 degrees! Then, I can get more pictures and information about her. Also, start working on her which I am really excited for!

Just need the snow to go away and spring to be here!!
