You are probably already aware of these sites. If not, check them out:

Wayne Taylor's screen name on S&F is "madman".

There are some real Johnson/Evinrude "gurus" there also. Just ask the question and they will answer it.

You should build a waterski motor for your boat. Use mild porting and use the intake silencer. It would be lighter and just as powerful as a new one and you could work on it.

Once I get an 18 to play with I will probably hot rod ( for water ski use) a 3.0 fingerport motor from 95-98. Those are readily available and have the better cooling systems than the older loopers. I bought the new boat in order to always have one ready, once that is set up to my liking I will try to get an 18 put together.

I am looking for a nice 175 60 degree carb motor just in case I decide to build another 18. I have some ideas that I would like to try, although mine is very good for what I use it for.

Please tell me what you are going to do to that motor.

If possible I'd like to start with a 95 or 96 3.0L Limited Edition which has 225 carbs on it. Do some mild port work to it for more low end and make sure it has a smooth idle. Might also try to get a high altitude gear case for it.

The LE motors had pretty plain looking cowls and were stealth torque monsters.

What is the high altitude gear? Is it 2 to 1?
