Anyone seen a 5" Airguide speedo? The ones I've seen all seem to be 4".

I'm looking to replace this one as the face is quite dis-colored.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

My boat has the big speedometers in it. The one you have looks quite good to me. Do not throw it away. It is a fairly rare one with kph on it. They show up on e-bay occasionally.

The mechanism on these old big ones is all metal and superior to the later plastic small ones in my opinion.

If you want it perfect, Palo Alto speedometer can restore the face for a price.

    Thanks Jim.

They tell me it's not the size that counts but how you use it!!

I have no plans to use a Km/h speedo but I will not throw this one out. I'm not even sure that this one works but I was told by the previous owner that it does?

I can't really replace it with a 4" speedo due paint dis-color behind the plate and the screw holes that are already there.

    Cheers,

    Kevin

You guys have done a really nice job upgrading your dashes.

Looks like the Airguide speedo's you have are fairly new. I'm looking for an older 5" Airguide from the '70's that's still in good shape.

My goal for now is to try and keep the boat "original". I'm planning on keeping all the old gauges providing my Merc 1500 will run.

I'll hold onto this speedo either way and, as Jim suggested, maybe have the face repaired.

Hey if you need any of those Mercury Gauges that you have ie Volts, RPM, Water Pressure I have a complete double set of them. Unfortunately only one of my old tachs works but you already have one so let me know of anything you need.

PS you can see the evolution of my gauge cluster from 1973 to the current set up here: http://www.hydrodyners.com/forum/viewto ... lit=gauges

    Thanks Daniel.

I'll keep that it mind. I was told by the previous owner that all the gauges work.

    Time will tell.

    Hi Kevin

The 2025 speedos (later model) are easy enough to take apart. Once apart you can remove the face plate and scan it. I was able to make a colour duplicate that was exactly the same size without any trouble.

You could clean it up with photoshop.

I have a fried that does glass etching. He can take a scan, print it and using a special process sandblast a piece of metal. You then spray it and have a new face plate as good as factory.

With a bit of work, you can even convert it to MPH or anything else.

It would be a bit expensive just for one, but not too bad. Probably about the same as a MPH speedo. PM me for his address if you want it.

Otherwise if you put a laminate over the dash you can holesaw a piece of wood to fill the current hole then holesaw inside that to fit your new gauge. You could do it with a wood grain insert or laminex or a sticker etc. It could look great if you do it with the right look material. Also very easy to undo and no damage if you want to return to stock. Does that explanation make sense?

I really like the chrome on your current gauge.

Otherwise you can get 5" paddlewheel driven speedos (but that means a hole in the bottom of the boat) or a 5" display Perfect Pass. http://www.perfectpass.com/pp_star_gazer.html Perfect Pass is now GPS based so no longer needs a paddlewheel and gee it is nice. I can get a good price for you on PP for an outboard. You'll need help getting it to work and PP won't provide that for an outboard but I've done it a few times now and it works great.

I like the aged look of it now. A little clean up would make it look nice. It already reads both mph and kph. They do come apart easy. Much easier than the later plastic ones. The pointer just pulls off and would be easy to touch up. You could even do it while it is on the instrument with a small brush.

The only disadvantage that I see is that it does not have the adjustment for barometric pressure changes that the later models have. That is a small price to pay for what I think is sort of distinctive and unusual look.
