    Re: Hydrodyne 13K 73414

Please tell me I'm looking for the serial number in the wrong spot!
I'm inside at the rear of the boat, adjacent to the engine & behind the gas tank.
In other words, on the port side about a foot from the stern. I hope this isn't where the serial number is 'cause I'd have to remove the tank and/or engine to get my head in to see a number.

    I'm wrong, right?

I would look elsewhere first. I have never seen an I/O with the tank in the rear!!

I think the thing to do is send a PM to bevcrosbymiller and ask her to have Tom look at this thread and see if he can help. crosbygrandson would be helpful also.

I am not everywhere, I am just old and have been tinkering with these boats for a while.

I still think it is an early boat probably originally equipped with a 289. I could be wrong.

Is the foredeck wood or glassed over wood? Is the bubble for the instruments molded into the glass?

    1) I think you're right about the 289. If I remember correctly the seized motor we replaced was a 289.

    2) The deck is glassed over wood I think. Either that or an amazing gelcoat.

    3) The bubble is molded into the glass.

BTW, are you saying that the tank is normally in the bow?

    Thanks again for your help.

If you look at the 60 something model runabout dynes the motor cover seperated like that and the fuel tank was in the back. I will post some pics that I have when I find them. Look closely at where the motor cover seperates on this boat:

During restoration, the gas tank of my 68 i/o was relocated from the rear to the bow. Love to hear what the Crosbys can offer.

The Ford 302 was introduced in early 1968. I can't find any information on the Volvo 270 production years and it may not be the original drive anyway. Volvo was willing to sell the drives without engines. I remember Ab Jr. saying that the first I/O's had the 289/Volvo combinations. Some of them had the 289 Hi Po engine with 271hp. The tank in rear means to me that they were trying for max speed.

Moving the tank to the front will enhance the performance (for skiing) dramatically in my opinion.

It may take a call to Tom Miller to get Bev on here to check her PM's. Tom was working with Ab Sr. when that boat was built.

If the bubble is part of the deck mold, it is probably not a very early prototype, it looks like a generation one hull, (no stringers or raised floor).

The serial number will be required for a title.

I forgot to answer the question about my boat. The 77's were generation two 18's with the single layer end grain balsa hull with stringers and raised floor. This is the way the boats are built now. The engine hatches were redesigned to be taller to accommodate the inline six engines. The older I/O hatches are prettier and more elegant in my opinion.

The older (generation one) hulls were probably stronger, but the balsa grain ran longitudinally instead of end grain (vertically). A balsa filament is about 32 inches long (I am told) so water migration is a bigger problem. Owners of these hulls should be particularly careful that they remain sealed from water intrusion. They are double layer and repair is more difficult. I should qualify all of that by saying I have never worked on a gen one hull. The above information is only what I have been told, and my 70 year old memory is not what it used to be. :smash:

You are right about the balsa. I think Tom told me that they went to one balsa core and stringers in 73'. I have restored a 72' O/B and it didn't have the stringers and raised floor. I called Tom to ask about my 79' I/O because I wanted to finish mine without the raised floor and thats when he told me about the difference in the cores. My 72' also had the serial # on the inside of the transom on an aluminum plate as well as molded in the back of the boat. There are about 12 older dynes as well, as one newer one (85?), here in Donalsonville,GA. I'm trying to get everyone together this summer and If i do I'll post some pics.
